What's a Truth Pick you ask? A Truth Pick is a short, sharp commentary designed to extract 'Truth' from a Quote, pithy saying, epigram or graffiti. I send these out about 2-3 times per week. My goal is to see if they strike a chord with anyone and if they do, to continue generating them. |

I do not pretend to know |

We have to know a lot to calmly state we don't know something. There’s no paradox here. When we live in green valleys we can see all of our surroundings. It’s not until we painfully ascend the slopes that we see dimly new uncharted horizons. Acquiring knowledge is as much about discovering new boundaries as it is about getting rid of them. Everything we learn opens new vistas of virgin territory. Luckily for us, our increased knowledge comes with an increased ability to cope with the newfound ignorance and uncertainty. We can define ignorance on the other hand, as the belief that what we know is all there is to know. Ignorance is typified by a self supporting arrogance. Not only do we know what’s true, but we’re not interested in anything that might contradict us. The true measure of knowledge is not the number of questions we know and have answers to, but the number of questions we know that confound us. For every hundred folks proudly claiming wisdom, there’s a solitary intellect humbly admitting ignorance. (c) 2002 Peter de Jager - Pdejager@truthpicks.com |
